Devlog 03 - Landscapes

After getting the character into a playable state there was time to create some more content.

I followed a bunch of tutorials to create the landscape materials and grass and used them to generate a simple map that shows the potential of the game.

The map is just a placeholder, once the level design still needs to be done. But it added a lot of value in helping to understand the style of the game.

A post-process was added to create a stylized look, I decided to go with this style because it doesn't need lots of detail or complex textures.

Now that I had a huge map it felt that I wasn't getting enough speed.

Changing the field of view depending on the velocity, and adding the trails VFX it helps create the sensation of speed.

I noticed that the map that I have now is also too big, which doesn't help create the sensation of speed. generally, it needs more detail and more reference points like trees.

Meanwhile, I also tried to create the boost or dash ability. At first, I tried to add to the character itself and use some reset timer, generally, it didn't feel good. So I added the boost to the map, so the player has to move through the circles to gain velocity.

I still want to try creating some kind of rhythm gameplay for the dash/boost mechanic so it might change in the future.
